Root canals are necessary when the pulp, or the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes infected or inflamed. A tooth can become infected when bacteria penetrate its interior. The tooth’s pulp, comprised of nerves and blood vessels, begins to die, which can lead to a lot of pain and eventually an abscess. Symptoms include sensitivity to hot and/or cold foods and drinks, toothaches, pain while chewing, darkening of the enamel, and swollen gums.
